Officina Profumo Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella is located in a 17th century museum space and store at the center of Florence. The history of the house begins when the Dominican friars settled in  Florence in 1220. By cultivating medicinal herbs, the monks began to prepare creams, ointments and medicines to help recovering patients in the own clinic. In 1381 they started to sell the famous rose water, used as disinfectant during the frequent plague epidemics. Ιn 1533, they created a perfume for Caterina de’ Medici, who became the bride of Henri II, son of Francis I, king of France. It was called “Acqua della Regina [Water of the Queen]”, a bergamot-based essence which really excited the queen and spread the reputation of friars in France. Later in 1612, the apothecary’s shop was expanded and turned into a veritable alchemic workshop which opened to the public, next to the Santa Maria Novella church, in 16, Via della Scala street in Florence.
The historic store – museum has been completely renovated bringing the atmosphere of the oldest pharmacy of Europe to every visitor from around the world. The old recipes are combined with present innovative technologies, preserving the legend of the 400 year old fragrant house, constant and unchanged.
