Since antiquity humans had the need to communicate with their Gods, which they expressed through rituals, prayers, sacrifices and, finally, through dedications and offerings.  A typical example are the “tamata” or “ex voto” (Greek and Latin respectively), which function as a quid pro quo and as a sign of gratitude for a favor given, thus sealing the divine agreement.
